What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-invasive manual approach to health
care. Chiropractors must have an undergraduate degree prior to attending
Chiropractic College. Their training consists of four intensive years of
chiropractic education, which includes a one year internship under the
guidance of a senior clinician where they develop and refine their skills.
Chiropractors assess disorders related to the spine, nervous system and
joins of the extremities and provide diagnosis, treatment and prevention of
those disorders. The primary goal of chiropractic manipulation, also
referred to an an adjustment, is to treat areas of decreased movement in
the joints of the spine and extremities which can create a reaction in
surrounding soft tisues (ligaments, muscles and nerves) resulting in pain,
dysfunction and muscular spasm. Chiropractors are also trained to prescribe
therapeutic exercise and can provide other non-invasive procedures such as
soft tissue therapy.
Soft Tissue Therapy
Chiropractic soft tissue therapy generally focuses on the area of chief
complaint rather than working on the entire body. Soft tissue therapy may
include therapeutic stretching, trigger point release, transverse massage
and muscle stripping. It is beneficial for people who have chronic muscle
soreness as well as those who have sustained injuries such as whiplash
repetitive strain syndromes, low back pain or sports related injuries.
Orthotics
Do you experience any of the following symptoms?
- Arch or heal pain
- Lower back pain
- Hip pain
- Knee pain
Custom foot orthotics are inserts for your shoes that correct the way
you stand, walk or run. Your feet provide the foundation for your entire
body and do an enormous amount of work each day. Even the smallest
imbalance can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. Orthotics help
restore optimal balance and foot function and provide relief from fatigue
and pain. Orthotics can be worn comfortably in your everyday footwear. They
provide your feet with gentle and consistent proper placement for sanding,
walking and running.

Chiropractic and Massage Therapy
Back pain, neck pain and headaches are just a few of the painful and
distressing conditions that affect most of us at some time. Chiropractic
and massage therapy, used in combination, form a powerful healing approach
that addresses your pain on many levels. Whether your pain is the result of
traumatic injury, overuse or stress, chiropractic and massage combined can
greatly speed your return to a pain-free, productive life.
Massage Supports Chiropractic
You can benefit in a number of ways by adding massage therapy to your
chiropractic care program:
· recovery
is normally faster and more complete when you address multiple components
of your pain
·
chiropractic treatment often proceeds more easily, with less
discomfort, when soft tissue has been relaxed with massage
·
adjustments frequently last longer when muscle tension is released
that might otherwise pull your joints out of alignment again.

Frequently Asked Chiropractic Questions
What to expect on your first visit
On your first visit, you will be asked to arrive approximately 15
minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to fill out a few forms (a
personal information form and a short health questionnaire.) After the
paperwork is complete, you will spend time with Dr. Lee discussing your
health history.
Health History
Your health history is an important tool to Dr. Lee in the evaluation of
your symptoms, your lifestyle, your family's health history and any
previous injuries and treatments. This is one on one time spent with Dr.
Lee and is used to help her get to know you and your health in more detail.
This is also an opportunity for you to ask her any questions you may have.
After the health history, a physical examination will be completed.
Physical Exam
During the physical examination, Dr. Lee will put your body through a
series of physical, orthopedic and neurological tests. This physical
examination will help determine your physical condition and overall health.
It will help reveal the condition of your spine (joint restrictions) and
areas of muscle tenderness or muscle spasm.
X-Rays
In certain situations, x-rays of your spine may be necessary. These
"blueprints" of your spine will show specific problems including
fractures and arthritis. They are also used to rule out tumors and other
conditions.
Diagnosis
Based on the findings from your health history and physical examination,
Dr. Lee will diagnose your condition and develop an individualized
treatment plan for you. Your treatment may include chiropractic
adjustments, soft tissue therapy, interferential current, ultrasound,
neuroelectical muscle stimulation or microcurrent.
In addition to your treatment plan, to help avoid future occurrences,
Dr. Lee usually includes advice on how to take care of your body with
simple strengthening and stretching exercises to enhance your activities of
daily life. Dr. Lee incorporates her knowledge of Fitness, Pilates and Yoga
to design a program that will suit your needs. This program of stretching
and strengthening exercises will help increase your flexibility and core
strength and ultimately give your body the support it needs to survive a
lifetime of stress and strain.
Expect your visit to last approximately 1 hour.
How much will it cost?
The fee for the first visit is $75.00 and subsequent visits are $45.00.
Receipts will be provided to patients so their extended health care plan,
if applicable, can reimburse them.
What does chiropractic treatment involve?
Chiropractors are best known for adjusting the joints of the spine. An
adjustment is performed on those joints of the spine that are not moving
properly and will adjust those joints to restore proper motion and function
to the spine. Treatment may also involve rehabilitative strengthening and
stretching exercises, postural retraining and instruction about proper body
mechanics.
What's the popping sound heard during an adjustment?
The popping sound heard during an adjustment is called a cavitation and
is a normal part of being adjusted. The spine is made up of vertebrae.
Where two vertebrae meet is called a joint. the joint has fluid in it.
Prior to delivery of the adjustment the joints comes to tension. This
tension causes gas bubbles to form from the fluid in the joint. When the
gas gets released a popping sound is heard.
How long will each visit take?
The first visit is the longest and usually takes approximately 1 hour.
Subsequent visits are shorter and take approximately 15 minutes.
How are Chiropractors trained?
Chiropractic is a regulated health profession. In Canada, Chiropractors
are required to complete a minimum of three years of university, followed
by four years at an accredited Chiropractic College.
A Chiropractic student received over 4500 hours of education, including
a full year of clinical internship. In order to practice as a Doctor of
Chiropractic (DC), students are required to pass both a provincial and
national set of examinations.
