The Benefits of Coconut Water!

Have you tired coconut water before? I hadn’t until recently and I have to say I am pretty impressed. Here’s the truth…I hate drinking plain ole water! There you go…confession time…I said it out loud. I tell my patients all the time to drink more water and yet there I am only drinking water when I’m working out OR worse yet already dehydrated and I am downing it when it’s already too late. I’ve tried it all…cucumbers, lemons, drinking from a straw, drinking from a fancy water bottle…but at the end of the day…there it was… my half empty (or half full depending on your outlook on life) bottle sitting there on my desk!

Dr. Mandy and Dr. Ayla, Bloom’s Chiropractor and Naturopathic Doctor were  lucky to be chosen as ambassadors for ZICO coconut water. I was excited to try coconut water for the first time and Dr. Ayla,  a long time fan of coconut water already was excited to try out a new brand.

ZICO is a relatively new company that was founded in 2004 by a guy named Mark Rampolla who first came across coconut water when volunteering in Cost Rica in the 90’s. Nine years after he founded a company that is passionate about healthy and active living his brand is recognizable on store shelves internationally. The company asked us to try their product and see what we thought. Before I tell you about our first impressions of ZICO coconut water let me share with you a few facts on why this natural hydration has been consumed worldwide for over 4000 years.

Young at heart (like US!): Coconut water is found inside young, green coconuts. It is clear, sweet liquid with a nutty taste.
Essential electrolytes: Athletes love coconut water as it contains 4 key electrolytes — sodium, magnesium, calcium, and potassium.
Potassium rich: In fact, this hydrating liquid is a great source of potassium which can help prevent muscle cramps and support recovering from exercise.
A few more benefits: For those looking for low fat hydration — 100% natural coconut water has no added sugar or fat and is cholesterol free

I used the original coconut water in my smoothie the next morning instead of plain water and it was fabulous!! It changed the texture of my smoothie a little bit and made it definitely more enjoyable. This was an easy change to make and given the benefits that ZICO provides why not start my day with a little extra kick start!?

I drank the chocolate coconut water straight up and it was delicious!  Not too sweet which I was happy about since i have been trying to cut down on my sugar consumption. (Having Dr. Ayla in the office has a positive affect on all of us!)  Also, I found this to be a much better alternative to a glass of chocolate milk (especially for those of you out there that are lactose intolerant like me!)

I was most excited to try the latte since I am a coffee lover and it didn’t disappoint! I saved this one for after my spin class instead of heading to the coffee shop! The latte flavour has natural caffeine, tastes exactly like a latte, offers as much potassium as a banana, and guess what…I didn’t feel dehydrated after drinking the ZICO latte like I normally do after my post workout coffee! Yes!

Dr. Ayla’s favourite is the original coconut water because it is 100% pure coconut water with no added sugar. The 15 grams of sugar that are in each 414mL bottle are naturally occurring sugars.  Straight from the coconut!
